Full exploitation of renewable energy sources, strengthening evacuation infrastructure and improving efficiencies of operations are among the immediate measures to improve power supply in Tamil Nadu, according to Mr Ramesh Kumar Khanna, Energy Secretary.
Addressing a seminar on sustainable energy for economic development organised by the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Khanna said that the in addition to the long term plans for adding generation capacity, the State Government is working on strengthening evacuation infrastructure to fully utilise the wind energy potential in the State.
The Government has charted out a Rs 3,600-crore programme for evacuation infrastructure and has sought the Centre's assistance.
“A 50 MW solar energy park is also being planned, apart from providing solar power streetlights in villages and solar lights in homes. Work is also on to improve the efficiencies in the existing power stations in the State,” he said.
Mr Hans Raj Verma, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, said the State Government has given a clear mandate to the TNEB to ensure the State is free of power cuts in one year's time. The industry, consumers and the government have to work together to address the concerns in power shortage.
