Faced with a surge in demand for MGNREGS jobs from farm workers due to poor monsoon this year, Maharashtra, Assam and Jharkhand have sought additional funds from the Centre for the scheme.
Poor rainfall in these states has affected agricultural activities, forcing farm workers to turn to the Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for their livelihood, according to reports.
A senior officer of the Rural Development Ministry confirmed the demand for additional funds from the three states.
“The Ministry is looking into the matter,” the officer engaged with the scheme said.
It has been seen that job demand under the scheme is generally low during the monsoon, which coincides with the peak agriculture season.
However, with more job seekers from farm hands, these states have overshot their estimates for work demand under the MGNREGS for the first three months of the current fiscal, forcing them to ask for extra funds from the Centre.
