Dr Arvind Mayaram will be the new Economic Affairs Secretary. He will succeed Mr R. Gopalan who retires on July 31.
Dr Mayaram is a 1978 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Rajasthan cadre.
At present he is Special Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Rural Development.
The new posting will be the third one in the Ministry of Finance, more specifically in the Department of Economic Affairs, for Dr Mayaram.
In his first stint, he served as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs from 1987 to 1991.
He came back to the same department as Joint Secretary (Infrastructure) in 2005 and stayed there till 2008.
After empanelment as Additional Secretary, he moved to the Ministry of Rural Development. He is due to retire in October 2015.
Dr Mayaram has a doctorate in finance. He joined the IAS on July 12, 1978. In his 34-year career, he has served in various state departments.
In his earlier role as Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, he was instrumental in formulating the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model besides other key policy initiatives.
