While jobs are aplenty, be warned. The professional job market is becoming increasingly competitive and intensifying by the day.

The youth of today are no doubt clearly focused - on improving their personal and career prospects. They should also be aware of certain ground realities as well, the Editor of The Hindu Business Line, Mr D. Sampathkumar said.

His caution comes in the wake of a research report by a rating agency, wherein it was observed said that at least 55 million people would be added to the job market in the next five years.

Citing the report, he said, "It also makes a sobering observation that in the last five years, the economy managed just 2 million jobs, net of attrition, redundancy and so on."

The 2 million could be an aberration because between 2005 and 2010, the better part of the economy went through difficult times, except certain sectors such as construction and financial services.

‘If you are trying your fortunes in these sectors, you can look with greater optimism than what the numbers of immediate job creation tend to suggest,’ he said, at a seminar titled ‘Aspire’ here today.

This Meet the CEO Conclave, organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association with the PSG Institute of Management and The Hindu Business Line at Taj Vivanta here, had a different format.

The event aimed to provide management students, an opportunity to hear the CEOs views in an informal setting.

He advised the aspiring managers to continuously reinvent themselves so as not to fall short of industry expectations. "Industry expectations are quite high. If you don’t reinvent, re-engineer yourself continuously, you may not be able to cope with the expectations of the business world," he said and urged the to-be managers to think in an entirely different way.

‘Learning is not complete just because you have completed an MBA programme,’ he said.
