More than 300 teachers in Maharashtra will undergo a vocational training in automotive sector as part of an initiative started by the Government of Maharashtra and Government of Victoria, Australia.

The Victorian government announced that it will give A$ 300,000 (Rs 1.5 crore) to Australia's Kangan Institute for training vocational teachers in Maharashtra.

“This Victorian model is recognised as one of the best in the world. The master training programme will focus on the upgradation of teacher's skills in the vocational sector,” said Geoffrey Conaghan, State Government of Victoria, Commissioner to India.

In the first phase of the “train the trainer” project, 125 teachers will be imparted training over a period of eight to ten weeks followed by monitoring and mentoring for six months after the training. The initiative will start by 2012.

“The new vocational teacher training programme will help strengthen links with Indian institutions. The partnership will support Maharashtra to build the skills of its workforce, improve business productivity,” said Mr Conaghan.

This is the second of the two major initiatives undertaken by the Victorian Government in association with the Australia India Institute to strengthen the relationship between Victoria and India. The Government of Victoria launched the Victoria India Doctoral Scholarship programme in June this year offering scholarships for Indian students seeking to conduct doctoral studies at Victoria's leading universities. Each student will get an allowance of Rs 45 lakhs for the three-year research period. “The field of study can be any area right from business, finance to education, humanities or archaeology. But, the work that is produced should be of benefit to India and Australia,” Mr Conaghan added.

The applications for the admissions to the scholarship programme will be given on the ‘Study Melbourne' website by the end of July. The “Study Melbourne” Web site has recently been launched in Hindi to enable better access for Indian students to education related information for Victoria.
