The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has requested the Governor, Dr K. Rosaiah, to take up with the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, the introduction of international flights from Madurai. The delegation from the Chamber led by the President, Mr N. Jegatheesan, and senior President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, that met the Governor recently, during his visit to the city, in a memorandum, said that the flight could be operated by Air India Express and other airlines should be urged to introduce flights connecting to Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and other Gulf countries. The chamber further urged the Governor to dissuade the Central Government from letting in FDI in multi-brand retail sector in the country. It wanted the implementation of the recommendation of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of 2009, that sought a ban on the entry of both the domestic corporate and foreign retailers in retail trade. The chamber also decried the recent statement of the Union Minister of Commerce on allowing FDI in multi-brand retail trade.
