The country's prestigious ballistic missile defence system (BMD) was successfully tested at 9.37 am off the coast of Orissa on Sunday by scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
A target missile mimicking the enemy's ballistic missile was launched from the launch Complex III of the interim test range (ITR) Chandipore at 9.32 am.
The missile tracking network namely the long range and multi function radars positioned at different locations immediately identified the incoming missile threat and tracked the missile, DRDO scientists explained.
Real time
The interceptor missile located at the nearby Wheeler's Island with a new warhead was fully ready to take off. The radars tracking the ballistic missile constructed the trajectory of the missile and continuous complex computation were done in real time to launch the interceptor at 9.37 a.m.., with the help of the radars from ground which guided the interceptor to the target (incoming ballistic missile).
The interceptor, AAD missile, successfully intercepted the ballistic missile at an altitude of 16 km and blasted it into pieces. All the events and mission took place in coy-book fashion.
Major milestone
The success of this flight test is a major milestone leading towards deployment of the BMD system, which gives the country protection from missile threats, DRDO scientists said, in a release.
The Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, Dr V.K. Saraswat, who was present during the launch operations, described the test as totally successful and a boost to taking the system towards deployment in the near future. He congratulated all the DRDO scientists and staff.
The Programme Director, Mr V.L.N. Rao, monitored the launch activities.
The Defence Minister, Mr AK Antony, also congratulated the DRDO scientists on the successful demonstration of the ballistic missile defence system, the release added.
