Following a major tsunami in Japan, the disaster management cell of the Karnataka Government has issued an alert along coastal Karnataka.
The disaster management cell has issued a statement asking fishermen not to venture into the sea. The Deputy Commissioners of Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts have been asked to remain on alert, and take precautionary measures. A close watch has to be maintained on all vulnerable areas, it said.
The disaster management cell asked the control rooms to be fully operational and report all incidents. It said that rescue and relief teams should be kept on standby for emergency duties.
Sources in the Fisheries Department said that an alert message has been conveyed to fishermen along the Karnataka coast. On an average, nearly 2,000 boats are in the sea.
Sources in the New Mangalore Port Trust said that they will keep a watch on the developments in the sea. Stating that they have not witnessed any tidal variations, they said port operations are continuing as usual.
