The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) is expected to meet on Tuesday to discuss measures to deal with drought in several parts of the country.
This is even as the overall deficit in South-West monsoon continues to remain at 21 per cent with parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab receiving scanty rains. Poor rains have affected sowing of key kharif crops such as coarse cereals, oilseeds and pulses.
The EGoM headed by the Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, is expected to discuss issues ranging from the current kharif crop condition to availability of food and fodder, water scarcity in these States.
It may also consider steps like imposing stockholding limits on pulses and edible oils, export policy relating to rice and sugar and measures to ban futures trade in agri-items.
Besides, the EGoM may also discuss providing subsidy on power and diesel to farmers in Punjab and Haryana.
