Dr Roy Kallivayalil, now Head of the Department for Psychiatry, Pushpagiri Medical College, Thiruvalla, has been selected as the Secretary General of the World Association for Social Psychiatry (WASP).

He will assume charge on May 1, 2011, at Geneva. The first Indian to be selected to this position, Dr Roy is at present the President – Elect of the Indian Psychiatric Society. Representing India, he will present his paper on ‘Person centered medical education, Indian vision' at the meeting convened by the World Health Organisation in Geneva from May 2-4, 2011. There are only 4,000 Psychiatrists in India according to the statistics published by the WHO, which is quite insufficient to meet the requirements.
