The Power Ministry announced on Tuesday that the country had achieved the commissioning of a record power generation capacity of 12,160.5 MW in 2010-11. Another 3,635 MW of projects had been synchronised during the period but were yet to achieve ‘full load', the Ministry said in a statement. The earlier record for generation capacity commissioned in a single year was in fiscal 2009-10, when 9,585 MW was added.
Notwithstanding the new landmark in terms of the highest capacity added in a single year since independence, the achievement is well short of the official target of 21,441 MW set for the period.
