The Indian industry should support research in academic institutions and also support engineering educational institutions, as the country badly needs employable engineers on a large scale to sustain the present growth levels, according to Dr V.K Saraswat, Secretary, Department of Research and Development, and the Director-General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
He was delivering the convocation address in the GITAM University here on Saturday after receiving an honorary doctorate. He said that “it is high time the industry should come forward in a whole-hearted manner to support the higher engineering institutes in their research pursuits. It will create a large pool of employable engineers, and result in good returns to the industry.”
Though there were more than 3,000 engineering colleges , with an annual intake of over a million students, there is a huge shortage of engineers in the IT & ITES sectors alone.
