While Big B made a return to quizzing contestants on ’Kaun Banega Crorepati’, Salman, who used to host ‘Dus Ka Dum’ on Sony, changed allegiance to Colors to be the ‘Dabangg’ host of the controversial reality show ‘Bigg Boss’
’Dhak Dhak’ girl Madhuri left the comfort of her US home and flew down to Mumbai to judge dance reality show ’Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’ ‘3 Idiots’ star R Madhavan also sat on the anchor’s seat for the game show ‘Big Money’
Cookery shows went from lifestyle channels to general ones with actor Akshay Kumar hosting ‘Masterchef India’ on Star Plus, while Ronit Roy did the same with ‘Kitchen Champion’ on Colors with TV stars as contestants.
Horror reality shows emerged as a new format with ‘The Chair’ on UTV Bindaas and ‘Girls Night Out’ on MTV, where contestants put out their courageous best to explore haunted locales.
The small screen also fuelled a number of controversies throughout the year. The I&B ministry served notices to ‘Emotional Atyachaar’ and MTV ‘Splitsvilla’ in February terming their content indecent and unfit for family viewing. The same happened at the end of the year to ‘Bigg Boss’ and ‘Rakhi Ka Insaaf’, with the latter shifting its airing time from 9pm to 11pm.
The trend of real—life marriages on television, which started in 2009 with ‘Perfect Bride’, continued with Rahul Mahajan marrying Dimpy Ganguly on ‘Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega’
TV actress Sara Ali entered a controversial wedlock with fiance Ali Merchant inside the ‘Bigg Boss’ house only to separate later.
Another trend which continued from the previous year was that of fiction programmes based on real—life phenomena.
Shows like ‘Balika Vadhu’, based on child marriage, and ‘Na Aana Is Des Lado’ about female infanticide, continued to entertain audiences as more such shows came up.
Other social issues depicted on the small screen were honour killing in ‘Rishton se Badi Pratha ...’ and eve—teasing in ‘Pratigya’ Obstacles in the life of a dwarf girl was shown in ‘Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo’, while the crime scene in rural UP became fodder for another serial ‘Gunahon Ka Devta’
This year also saw a number of talented actors from the big screen trying their luck on the small. Actors Ashutosh Rana and Kabir Bedi turned villains on ‘Kali — Ek Agni Pariksha’ and ‘Ganga Ki Dheej’ respectively, so did actor Aman Verma on ‘Na Ana Is Des Lado’.
