Tamil Nadu is losing nearly 1,000-1,500 MW of wind power on a daily basis as the power is not being evacuated by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, which could sell this unutilised energy to power traders, according to the Indian Wind Power Association.

The State Government should relax the ban on export of power to other States to fully exploit the wind power.

In a representation to the Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, a copy of which was released to the media, the association has said that the Tangedco could sell the unutilised energy to power traders and buy it back when the demand peaks.

According to the IWPA, about 25-30 million units can be collected and sold outside the State daily from wind mills that are left out of the grid because power is generated at a time when it is not needed.

The power can be sold to traders between 11a.m. and 6p.m. when it is not needed within the State. But there is a deficit of power between 5a.m. and 11a.m. when the State needs about 200 MW more than available and again between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. when an additional 400 MW is needed.

This could be a package deal between Tangedco and a power trader which would give the double benefit of full exploitation of wind energy while addressing the power shortage in the State.

As of now Tangedco is evacuating about 23-28 million units of wind energy daily against 50-55 MUs as of August 19. About 28-30 MUs of electricity are not being evacuated with wind energy generators left out of the grid, according to the association.
