Fifty per cent of the turmeric brought for sale at Erode markets was unsold due to inferior quality.
“On Friday only low quality turmeric arrived for sale. So the traders procured fifty per cent of the arrived 4,300 bags by quoting decreased price for the finger variety. Some traders have received demand for the root variety and so they bought root variety at a higher price to fulfil their local orders,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.
At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,409-8,009; the root variety ₹5,136-7,437. Of the arrival of 935 bags, 270 were sold.
At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric traded at ₹7,099-8,027; the root variety ₹6,889-7,719. Of the 1,240 bags on sale, 620 were traded.
At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹6,599-8,099 and the root variety ₹6,819-7,699. Of the 911 bags placed for sale, 817 found takers.
