Cooperative marketing institutions have profited from a marketing tie-up with Hindustan Unilever.

According to the policy note for 2011-12 of the Cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection Department, tabled in the Assembly today, the Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Societies (APCMS) have tied up with Hindustan Unilever Ltd to retail consumer products through the public distribution system shops run by the marketing societies and link societies.

This has helped them earn current profits, and this impetus will be sustained by monitoring, guidance and financial support, if needed. They are also being supported with interest-free working capital loan to initiate marketing operations, the policy note said.

Vacant spaces available with the marketing societies will be developed into warehousing complexes with assistance from the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund, and godowns of these societies will be registered with the Warehousing and Development Authority to facilitate issue of warehouse receipts.

Processing facilities

Processing facilities will also be established either directly or through Build-Operate-Transfer basis. These are part of the initiatives by the cooperative's drive to expand existing businesses and diversify into new areas. Emphasis is on new auction yards and improvement of produce pledge loans. The APCMS have also been permitted to operate jewel loan business to improve their earnings and to hedge against seasonal swings in the commodity business.
