Tea production in the Nilgiris, the largest tea growing district in the South, has risen as much as 69 per cent in April over the same month last year.
“Due to well distributed rainfall, high relative humidity and optimum sunshine, most estates have harvested good crop in April. Production in our member estates has risen to 1.52 million kg (mkg) from 0.90 mkg in April 2010 and the five-year average for the month, 1.36 mkg”, Dr B Radhakrishnan, Assistant Director, UPASI Tea Research Foundation, told Business Line.
This works out an increase of 69 per cent over April 2010 and 51.11 per cent over the five-year average.
The cumulative production in the four months has also increased. “Cumulative production during Jan-Apr 2011 has risen to 4.72 mkg from 4.16 mkg in the same period of last year and the five-year average of 4.33 mkg”, Dr Radhakrishnan said.
