The Tamil Nadu Government has announced Rs 105.47 crore plan to add 1.55 lakh tonnes of additional storage capacity for agricultural produce.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa announced in the Assembly that the State Government would add the additional godown facility in rural areas to augment the existing 8 lakh tonnes of storage space available with the Farmers' Cooperative Marketing Societies and Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Societies.

This would be funded through loans from the National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund scheme.

Storage facilities

The plan is to build 1,118 godowns of 100 tonne capacity each through the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies; and godowns 500 tonnes to 2,000 tonnes for Farmers Cooperative Marketing Societies to set up a total of 1,166 godowns across the State.

Creating storage facilities gives multiple economic benefits as they enable the farmer to access credit against stocks and help them tide over market fluctuations and sell their produce at remunerative prices.

The move will also support the State Government's plans to support the increased production. The State Government has set a foodgrains production target of 115 lakh tonnes of foodgrains, she said.
