The Tobacco Board here has made arrangements for supply of ammonium sulphate to tobacco growers in Prakasam, Nellore and other districts, according to a press release issued by the board. Farmers have been facing problems for want of the fertiliser and have urged the board to make arrangements for its supply.

According to the release, virginia tobacco growers have placed indent with the Tobacco Board for supply of about 31,250 tonnes of various fertilisers for the current crop season. Of this, 5400 tonnes of ammonium sulphate was indented by growers, especially from Prakasam and Nellore districts. So far, the board has received about 20,000 tonnes of other fertilisers viz., DAP, SSP, SOP, CAN & 20:20:0:13, and most of these fertilisers have been distributed to the growers on time.

Regarding ammonium sulphate, the board has signed a contract with Gujarat State Fertiliser Co for purchase of 5,400 tonnes at Rs 420 per bag of 50 kg.

Tobacco Board Chairman G. Kamala Vardhana Rao has pursued the matter with the Union Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilisers and impressed upon it to permit GSFC to supply ammonium sulphate immediately, adds the release. Company officials have agreed to move 1,620 tonnes of ammonium sulphate to Ongole within three days and the rest in the first week of November. Tobacco farmers can get it at Rs 445 per bag of 50 kg.
