On the request from Gujarat government for extending groundnut procurement by additional 4 lakh tonnes (lt), the Union Agriculture Ministry on Thursday allowed one lakh tonnes of procurement under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).

The State government confirmed that the Centre on Thursday accorded approval for additional groundnut procurement of 1 lakh tonne from Gujarat over and above the 8 lt which has already been procured over the past three months by procurement agencies under the National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation (Nafed). The additional purchases need to be completed by February 10.

“We had urged the Union Ministry of Agriculture to allow procurement of 4 lakh tonnes of groundnut in addition to the existing procurement of 8 lakh tonnes. The Ministry has given its approval for 1 lakh tonnes, while the subsequent procurement will be considered after reviewing the availability of storage facilities,” said RC Faldu, Gujarat’s Agriculture Minister.

Faldu also mentioned that all the State-owned warehouses were full and the new stock under the purchases will be stored at private warehouses taken on lease. The procurement, which was stopped since January 22 from all the centres across the State, will resume within a couple of days.

This will benefit a large number of small farmers who had already listed their names for procurement but were left out due to purchase limit, stated Faldu.
