The Coir Board has clinched the single largest order for supply of coir products worth Rs 2 crore from Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam, (TTD) as part of improving pilgrim facilities at the hill shrine in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

Considered as a major achievement in its domestic market development plan, the Coir Board will supply the entire materials, including large quantities of rubberised coir mattresses, in a span of two months time immediately on receipt of firm orders. This would also mark the beginning of continuous off take of coir products by the Devastanam, Coir Board Chairman, Mr V.S. Vijayaraghavan, said.

The decision to procure coir products directly from the Coir Board was to ensure transparency in the dealings of the Devastanam, he said.

This followed discussions that Mr Vijayaraghavan had with TTD officials led by the Devasthanam Joint Executive Officer, Mr Srinivasa Raju, and the Chief Engineer, Mr Chandrasekhara Reddy, at Tirumala last week. The Coir Board Director (Marketing), Mr M. Kumaraswamy Pillai, also took part in the discussions.

Mr Pillai made a presentation before the TTD officials on the applications of coir products for use by the TTD at its temple premises and guest houses. The TTD also evinced interest in the use of coir geo-textile to protect the embankments of the Devastanam pond “Pushkarani” and coir pith manure to grow more vegetation and gardens as part of beautification of the surroundings.

A field demonstration on the application of coir geo-textiles and usage of Coir Pith Organic Manure for gardening purposes would also be arranged separately, Mr Vijayaraghavan added.
