Tamil Nadu produced more tea in the first two months of the calendar year. It produced 20.71 million kg (mkg).

Still, the output was lower by 1.06 mkg compared with the same period a year ago.

North India was reeling under a spell of harsh winter and production is yet to commence in many regions.

Much of the production will hit the market only after April.

There has been a shortfall in production in both North and South India in January and February compared with 2014.

The country's production is 2.27 per cent lower.

"Production dropped to 36.94 mkg from 37.78 mkg,” said Rajesh Gupta, who compiles tea production data. Kerala produced the country’s second largest volume of 9.27 mkg, some 0.88 mkg more than last year.

Karnataka’s production was marginally down.

Collectively, South India lost 0.23 mkg to produce 30.80 mkg. North Indian output fell by 0.61 mkg to dip to 6.14 mkg.

Assam lost 0.75 mkg to produce 1.21 mkg but West Bengal managed to gain 0.23 mkg to reach 4.81 mkg despite Darjeeling yet to open its account for the year.
