The indefinite closure of factories by the members of The Nilgiri Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturers’ Association (TNBLTMA) came to an end on Friday with its member factories resuming the purchase of green leaf from the small growers.

“At the meeting of the stakeholders held at the office of the Nilgiris district Collector last evening, Tea Board Executive Director C Paulrasu advised each factory to declare the price payable to the small growers for the green leaf it had bought from them in May on the basis of the prevailing Price Sharing Formula (PSF)”, TNBLTMA President Ramesh Bhojarajan told Business Line .

“This would mean each factory paying to the concerned small growers 65 per cent of the average price it got at the auctions in May. We had been demanding the Board to fix the green leaf price on such PSF at the end of each month based on the price each factory got for its teas sold at the auctions. Accordingly, we have withdrawn our stir with immediate effect”, he said.

“The District Collector and the Superintendent of Police were present at this meeting. We have informed them as also the Tea Board that we have resumed the purchase of green leaf from Friday”, he disclosed.

“Since Monday, many factories in our membership had not been buying green leaf. This caused a stagnation of about 10 lakh kg of green leaf with the growers per day. This also meant stoppage of around 2.5 lakh kg of tea production worth ₹two crore per day by such factories”, he observed.
