The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has appointed Shahidur Rashid as its new regional director for South Asia based in New Delhi, a statement said here on Friday.
A native of Bangladesh, Rashid is an economist and Senior Research Fellow at IFPRI’s development strategies and governance division. Rashid is known for his contribution towards promoting agricultural input and output markets in Africa.
In Ethiopia, he coordinated a set of sector studies that led to the establishment of the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agencies (ATA), which is now well recognised as a model in the continent. Besides, he co-led a large research programme, which led to the setting up of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa.
“Shahid has a strong research record, and he has successfully managed large projects in Ethiopia and Bangladesh as well as several multi-country research projects in both Africa and Asia,” said IFPRI Director-General Shenggen Fan, in the statement.
