Isolated hailstorms or thunder squalls have been warned of over the plains of northwest India as a causative western disturbance prepares to sign off from the region.

The variously violent weather will be at play until Saturday evening over the plains of Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, east Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and north Madhya Pradesh.

Isolated heavy rain or snow would occur over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during this period.

MOVES ACROSS

The weather-maker western disturbance has moved entirely across the border to sit smack over Jammu and Kashmir and will keep moving further to the east and away.

While doing so, the system would continue to affect the western Himalayan region and adjoining plains of northwest India before fading in intensity.

The upper air cyclonic circulation that the parent westerly system gave birth to over south Rajasthan has persisted.

It cannot survive for long after the parent leaves it behind, and would rather die out. But before it meets with its fate, it would have anchored the disturbed to wet weather over the plains.

FRESH WESTERLY?

An extended outlook by India Meteorological Department (IMD) suggested that the weather would get increasingly dry from Wednesday next.

Global models, however, are of the view that there is possibility of another westerly trough making its way into the northwest and hurling in a cyclonic circulation, the likes of which currently persists over south Rajasthan.

In the short-term, though, the IMD expected minimum temperatures to fall by 2 to 3 deg Celsius over northwest India and the maximum temperatures to rise by a similar margin over plains of northwest and adjoining central India from tomorrow (Saturday) onwards.

MERCURY TRENDS

This would come about as skies clear up as the prevailing western disturbance withdraws to the east along with associated cloudiness.

Shorn of the clouds, the days would warm up as the sun beats down on land during the day while the northwesterly winds blow in the cooler arctic air during the night.
