The global black tea production is posting a rising trend despite a decline in India, the world’s largest black tea producer.

“Data received from various producing countries shows that the global black tea output so far this calendar year has risen to 612.89 million kg (mkg) from 604.48 mkg in the same months of 2017. This increase of 8.41 mkg marked a growth of 1.39 per cent,” Rajesh Gupta, compiler of ‘Global Tea Digest’, told BusinessLine .

The biggest increase of 22.79 mkg has happened in Kenya where the production has risen to 144.34 mkg from 121.55 mkg. Sri Lanka posted a 6.17 mkg rise in output to reach 134.56 mkg, while Malawi’s rose by 2.90 mkg to touch 32.20 mkg.

India posted the biggest loss of 15.07 mkg to dip to 289.76 mkg. Uganda lost 8.10 mkg to fall to 6.60 mkg.

India continues to top the global black tea production table followed by Kenya and Sri Lanka.
