An ‘intense’ western disturbance bearing down on North-West India has brought heavy snowfall/rain at most places over Jammu & Kashmir and at a few places over Himachal Pradesh during the 24 hours ending on Monday morning.

Rain or thundershowers have been reported from a few places over Punjab and at isolated places over West Rajasthan during this period, an India Met Department (IMD) update said.

Chief amounts of snowfall recorded (in cm) are: Gulmarg-18.0; Kupwara-15.0; and Pahalgam-12.0 (Jammu & Kashmir); Keylong-8.0 and Kalpa-1.4 (Himachal Pradesh).

Chief amount of rainfall recorded (in cm) are: Banihal-5.7; Batote-4.7; Gulmarg-1.6; Kupwara-1.8; and Pahalgam-1.7 (Jammu & Kashmir), Amritsar-4.7 (Punjab); and Jaisalmer-Trace (Rajasthan).

Hyperactive offspring

The parent western disturbance lay over North Pakistan and adjoining & Kashmir (having moved in East from Sunday’s location) while its hyperactive offspring circulation moving ahead, had dropped anchor fully within Indian territory over West Rajasthan.

The IMD forecasts indicated that widespread rainfall/snowfall along with heavy to very heavy falls would occur over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for tomorrow as well.

Widespread light to moderate rainfall with gusty winds speeding up to 30 km/hr would affect the plains, especially over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, North Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

Isolated heavy rainfall was forecast over Punjab and North Haryana on Monday. There is also the possibility of thunderstorm accompanied with isolated hailstorm in the region on both Monday and Tuesday.

‘Low’ forms over bay

Meanwhile, the IMD has indicated that a follow-up western disturbance would affect North-West India from Thursday.

It may not be as well-endowed as its predecessor but would still be able to kick up weather even over other parts of the country.

This is because it is widely expected that the westerly winds associated with the system may interact with moist easterly winds from a low-pressure area that has formed afresh over the southern parts of the Bay of Bengal.

The easterly winds from the Bay should be steered by a resident anticyclone (with clockwise winds) over East India from over Tamil Nadu and adjoining Interior South Peninsula to set up the productive interaction.

It should trigger rainfall over Central India besides the plains in the North. Isolated rainfall has also been forecast for South Peninsular India and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
