Maharashtra agriculture minister Eknath Khadse on Tuesday said seed companies selling Bt cottonseeds will have to reduce their rates by ₹100 per packet of 450 gram in view of farm distress in the State.
Else, the State Government will issue an ordinance to reduce the prices.
Khadse made the announcement at the State Secretariat, while chairing a review meeting of seed prices in the State. In Maharashtra, 104 registered companies are selling Bt cotton seeds to the farmers at the rate of ₹930/pack.
A press statement issued by his office said that the farmers in the State have been constantly suffering from droughts, untimely rains and hailstorms therefore the Minister asked the companies to reduce the prices.
In 2014-15, cotton was planted over 42 lakh hectares in the State, which produced 85 lakh bales (of 170 kg each).
