The Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd will release flavoured milk in CPP (cast polypropylene) bottle in Mangaluru on Wednesday.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Raviraj Hegde, president of Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd, said the initiative to release milk in CPP bottles was taken as the they can be recycled. It is easier to recycle the CPP bottles than the glass bottles, he said, adding that it is easier to transport milk in CPP bottles.

Milk in CPP bottles – which will be launched in badam, pista, mango, rose and chocolate flavours – will have a shelf life of 90 days.

Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd, which has 721 milk producers cooperative societies in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, procures around 4.6 lakh litres of milk a day from its members.

It markets around 3.4 lakh litres of milk every day, he said. On August 21, it sold an all-time high of 4.13 lakh litres of milk.

The union’s dairy converts around 30,000-40,000 litres of milk into milk powder every day.

In addition to this, the union also markets around 60,000 kg of curd every day. In fact, the milk union sold a maximum of 80,999 kg of curd on April 30.

Though other milk unions in the state have reduced the milk procurement price, Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd did not do that. (The Dakshina Kannada union is one of the 14 milk unions in the State that is part of the Karnataka Milk Federation)

Depending on the quality of milk, a farmer gets a minimum of ₹28.67 for a litre of milk sold to the union. Added to this, the State government has extended an incentive of ₹5 a litre to the farmer. However, the procurement price of milk has come down to ₹21-24 a litre in other milk unions in the state, he said.

As part of the 65th all-India cooperative week celebration, Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd will organise a programme on the theme ‘cooperative marketing, processing and storage’ at its Mangaluru dairy on November 14, he said.
