Concerned over the unprecedented crisis in the plantation industry, the Association of Planters of Kerala (APK) has asked the central and state governments to take corrective measures to keep the industry going.
APK’s appeal comes at a time when prices of commodities such as tea, rubber, cardamom in the state etc are at their lowest in five years, plunging growers into crisis.
If corrective steps are taken immediately, APK warned that the plantation sector would be badly hit, affecting thousands of jobs. C Vinayaraghavan, Chairman, APK said that the situation, especially in the rubber sector, has forced growers to move away from cultivation. Already, small and marginal growers are looking to other ways to make a living.
This will further reduce production, forcing India to source raw materials from South-East Asia, he said adding that this would go against the spirit of “Make in India”.
