Unfavourable climatic conditions in the producing regions hit arrivals at the Coonoor tea auctions last week.

Plucking was affected by the rains and winter setting in early, traders said. Though the North-East monsoon has set in, any deficiency is likely to further impact production, they said, adding that the on-going conflict in West Asia between Israel and Hamas had impacted trade in orthodox leaf shipments, Orthodox leaf witnessed a drop in sales percentage.

In sale 42, of the 18,94,166 kg offered in the leaf category, 85 per cent was sold, while in dust grades, of the 5,38,836 kg offered, 87 per cent was sold.  

Global Tea Auctioneers said in orthodox leaf, primary whole leaf grades had fair demand and sold dearer by ₹3-4. The brokens were easier by ₹2-3, with some withdrawals. Secondaries and fannings were also lower by ₹2-3.

High-priced teas dearer

High-priced teas in CTC leaf grades had fair demand and sold dearer by ₹8-10. The better liquoring sorts were barely steady to occasionally easier by ₹1-2. Better medium sorts were dearer by ₹1- 2.

The mediums and plainer sorts brokens and fannings were easier by ₹1-2, while bolders sold lower by ₹1-2.

In CTC dust, high-priced and better liquoring sorts were lower by ₹8-10. The better medium sorts were easier by ₹1-2. The mediums and plainer sorts were also easier by ₹1-2 and more at times, with fair withdrawals.

In the dust orthodox category, the primary grades had good demand and sold dearer by ₹10-15 and much more at times, in line with quality. The secondaries and finer dusts were lower by ₹1-2.
