Tea prices at auctions across the country have risen by 3.93 per cent in the first five months of current calendar compared to the same period last year, reveals an analysis of the latest data available with the Tea Board.
Between January and May, average price rose to Rs 99.18 a kg from Rs 95.43. This increase of Rs 3.75 a kg marked a growth of 3.93 per cent.
In the North Indian auctions, prices rose by Rs 1.95 a kg (1.81 per cent), to reach Rs 109.50 . All auction centres except Kolkata posted an increase over last year. Jalpaiguri fetched the country’s highest price average of Rs 141.42 a kg but only a small volume of 57,000 kg has been sold there so far. There was no sale in the corresponding period of 2011.
Kolkata auctions fetched Rs 115.32 (last year: Rs 116.39), followed by Siliguri Rs 105.89 (Rs 99.57) and Guwahati Rs 103.66 (Rs 100.73). No auction took place at Amristar centre this year.
All auction centres in the South posted an increase in price. The overall price average in South Indian auction centres increased by Rs 6.82 a kg (9.23 per cent) to reach Rs 80.69. Here, Kochi auctions fetched the highest average price of Rs 91.82 (Rs 81.47) followed by Coimbatore Rs 75.55 (Rs 69.95) and Coonoor Rs 74.77 (Rs 69.24).
Teaserve, the world’s first electronic auction centre, fetched the country’s lowest price average of Rs 67.68 (Rs 60.63). It was also the lowest price average among all auction centres in the world.
