Drought is taking a toll on India’s tea production. While the country posted a 6 per cent rise in tea production in January (over January 2016), February was a dry month, with all regions reporting a lower output than in February 2016.
Quoting Tea Board data, Rajesh Gupta, compiler of the Global Tea Digest , told BusinessLine South India produced 11.55 million kg, down 22 per cent over February 2016, while the North produced 1.99 mkg, down 13 per cent. “In the two months, output fell 7 per cent to 32.53 mkg from 35.08 mkg,” he said.
