Indian tea production, which until June had risen by 9.40 million kg (mkg), has fallen by 1.95 mkg at July end. "Tea Board has just now come out with July production data and our compilation shows that in the seven months, the country produced 562.52 mkg against 564.46 mkg. This fall of 1.95 mkg marked a decline of 0.34 per cent," said Rajesh Gupta, compiler of annual Global Tea Digest. This happened because of a drastic fall of 11.97 mkg in North India in July even as South India managed to produce 0.62 mkg more. In the North, production till July rose by 19.01 mkg to reach 441.41 mkg. Assam continued to top India’s production table at 275.84 mkg (up 13.03 mkg). In the South, production in the seven months fell by 20.96 mkg to dip to 121.10 mkg. Tamil Nadu lost 14.44 mkg to fall to 85.12 mkg and Kerala lost 5.69 mkg to dip to 33.04 mkg.
