The falling trend witnessed in the recent weeks in the offer for the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association continues for Sale No: 12 which will conclude on Friday for which a volume of 9.15 lakh kg has been catalogued. This is the lowest volume offered so far in the current calendar arising from the fall in production due to harsh winter conditions.

It is some 17,000 kg less than the offer for last week’s auctions.

Of this, 6.30 lakh kg belongs to leaf grades and 2.85 lakh kg, dust grades. As much as 8.28 lakh kg belongs to CTC variety and only 87,000 kg, orthodox variety. The proportion of orthodox teas continues to be low in both leaf and dust grades. In the leaf counter, only 54,000 kg belongs to orthodox while 5.76 lakh kg, CTC. Among the dusts, only 33,000 kg belongs to orthodox while 2.52 lakh kg, CTC.

The Broken Orange Pekoe Fanning of Homedale Estate, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped the entire auction last week when Shreeji Traders bought it for ₹262 a kg. This was the highest price fetched by any tea, CTC or orthodox, from any factory, bought-leaf or corporate.

Two other grades of Homedale Estate, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, followed at ₹256 and ₹250.

No other grade including the orthodox teas from corporates could fetch ₹200 a kg.
