The maximum and minimum temperature regime in the North-West is now in a phase of constant churn given the chain of atmospheric events triggered by the movement of western disturbances.

These movements will lead to change in wind direction, extent of moisture carry, cloud formation and precipitation. The mere ‘passing’ of the disturbances to the East itself becomes an event of significance.

Worthy successor

Expected light precipitation is neither good nor bad for the rabi wheat crop, now mostly in the harvesting stage. But a heavy spell or a hailstorm is the last thing farmers want, especially those who have kept the harvested grains in the open.

The India Met Department (IMD) on Friday said that a resident western disturbance would move away to East-North-East by Saturday.

But a worthy successor on its way in could cause scattered to widespread precipitation with isolated thunderstorm accompanied by gusty wind and hailstorm over the Jammu division and Himachal Pradesh on Monday/Tuesday.

Thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds is forecast over North-East India in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on these days.

A National Agromet Advisory Service Bulletin issued by the IMD has advised farmers in Jammu and Himachal Pradesh to use the ‘hail net’ for orchard crops for protection from ‘mechanical damage’ (damage to vegetation from using equipment and from weather related events).

Agromet advisory

Young fruit plants and vegetables may be given support to prevent the crops from ‘lodging’ due to strong winds. Harvested produce may be kept at safe places.

In view of rain/snow forecast at most places over Jammu & Kashmir, farmers may avoid irrigation and inter-cultural operation. Plant protection measures may be undertaken and fertilisers applied to standing crops.

Farmers in the North-East India have been told to provide support to banana, young fruit plants and vegetables to prevent the crops from lodging due to strong winds. Harvested produce ma be at safe places.

Meanwhile, in the South, an easterly wave is forecast to start impacting weather from Friday. Winds could pick speeds reaching 30-40 km/hr on Friday and Saturday occasionally over Gulf of Mannar and Comorin.

An extended forecast by the IMD suggested that most parts of the peninsula would receive moderate to above normal precipitation during the week March 16-22.
