The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards making body in the country, has announced a simplified procedure for its ISI mark certification programme on Tuesday.
The newly launched certification programme will grant licenses to products under mandatory certification and reduce the time taken for grant of such licenses.
“With the introduction of the certification process we intend to improve the quality of products manufactured in India and restrict the import of defective products. Also, background checks will be initiated on every product to keep a check on the quality of products being imported or manufactured in the country,” Alka Panda, Director-General, BIS, said.
The government has brought three BIS standards, namely IS 6911, IS 5522 and IS 15997, into the ambit of the quality control order, which means that all grades of stainless must be certified by BIS irrespective of whether they are is manufactured in the country or imported from abroad.
More than 50 per cent of the stainless steel consumption in the county goes into utensils and kitchen appliances and a large chunk of the population uses it to cook.
Based on the quality of products manufactured by Jindal Stainless Ltd (Hisar), Abhyuday Jindal, Vice-Chairman, was given BIS certificates and secured certification under two BIS standards for manufacture of stainless steel flat products in the country.
