Electricity trade with neighbouring countries is expected to rise in the near term, according to Secretary, Ministry of Power, A. K. Bhalla. Addressing a session of the CII Transmission Line Conference 2017, Bhalla said, “We are importing power from Bhutan, where more hydro power plants are expected to come up. We are exporting a small chunk of power to Bangladesh. There are projects that we are now looking at exporting large quantity of power to Bangladesh.”

"We are exporting power to Nepal and we will be importing from them," he added.

Bhalla said the opportunities for the transmission sector are bound to grow as power demand rises. He said, “The current power generation capacity is 330 GW and available power generation is close to 210 GW. We are going to reach 500 GW in the next five years. Once this much power comes in, we expect consumption to go up to 245-250 GW from 160 GW today.”

He said the per capita consumption of electricity will increase as the government pushes ahead with electrifying all households. This will be done after electrifying all villages by the end of the current calendar year.

Bhalla said the growth of industrial power generation is not visible currently. But this is a short-term phenomenon, and he expects a substantive increase in power consumption once this comes online.
