In 2015-16, the Government had issued defence procurement orders worth Rs 1.78 lakh crore. Lt General Rajeev Tewari, GOC Bengal area, stated this here at an event organised by CII.

He said that domestic private sector players in collaboration with foreign partners would serve a significant portion of the order.

He also mentioned that not only big players such as Tatas, Mahindras, L&T, Anil Ambani Group and Pipavav Defence got involved in defence production drive, but a large number of small and medium units have also joined in.

Until last December, 61 industrial licences for defence production were issued. The Centre is preparing a new defence procurement policy to be rolled out from April. The new policy will further simplify the procedures for private sector participation in defence production in the country.
