GSM mobile operators added 14.7 million new mobile subscribers in the month of February, taking the total tally to 555 million. Vodafone Essar was the top grosser with 3.5 million new users, followed by Bharti Airtel with 3.2 million. Idea Cellular was at the third spot with an addition of 2.5 million subscribers. The three operators are also the biggest gainers due to the introduction of Mobile Number Portability. But there is no big surge in the monthly net addition being reported by these operators, since the net gain due to MNP is only a few lakh subscribers till now.
Vodafone's performance over the last 3-4 months has reduced the gap between number 1 and number 2 operators in the market considerably. While Airtel still has the largest number of subscribers, it is now only 18 million subscribers ahead of Vodafone. Among the new players, Uninor continue to add over a million new subscribers despite its licences being investigated. Uninor now has more than 20 million subscribers. Other new operators including Loop, Etisalat DB, Videocon and STel added a few lakh subscribers.
