Gujarat's population has reached 6.03 crore, while the urban population has risen from 37 per cent in 2001 to 43 per cent in 2011, making it one of the fastest growing urbanised states, according to the Census.

The Census said Gujarat has five per cent share of the country's population and 6 per cent of the geographical area.

Gujarat's population has increased by 97,12,611 during the decade of 2001 to 2011.

The total population of Gujarat, according to Census 2011, stood at 6,03,83,682 – 3,14,82,282 males and 2,89,01346 females. The State's population during 2001-2011 was 19.17 per cent, down from 22.66 per cent in the 1991-2001 decade.

“The decadal growth of State during 2001-2011 declined by 3.49 per cent,” Chief Principal Census Officer and Director of Census Operations, Gujarat, Mr Manish Bharadwaj told a press conference.

Of the total population, 57.4 per cent lives in rural areas and 42.6 per cent resides in urban centres, he said.

“In 2001 Census, 62.6 per cent population was living in rural areas, while 37.4 per cent was the urban population. The rise in urban population shows the Gujarat is one of the fastest growing urbanised States in the country,” he said.

Gujarat is among the few States where child sex ratio has increased, from 883 per 1,000 in 2001 to 886 in 2011, Mr Bharadwaj said.

The density of population increased to 308 per sq km in 2011 from 258 in 2001, a difference of 19.38 per cent.

Highest density was recorded in Surat district at 1,376 persons per sq km, followed by Ahmedabad at 890. The lowest density is in Kutch district, 46 persons per sq km.

The effective literacy rate in Gujarat in 2011 is 79.31 per cent as compared to 69.14 per cent in 2001, showing an increase of 10.17 per cent. The female literacy rate rose by 12.39 per cent, according to the counting figures.

The literacy rate among male is 87.23 per cent, while that of women is 70.73 per cent, the Census said.
