Passenger aircraft landings and departures to Bangalore will be stopped twice every day during Aero India 2011 to accommodate military flying displays at the show, airport operator Bengaluru International Airport Ltd (BIAL) said. Scheduled commercial airlines, airport bus and taxi operators have been informed of the changes.

The event is on from February 9 to 13, while many aircraft participating in the show are expected to start rehearsals from February 6. The ninth air show will be held at the Yelahanka Air Base, located some 40 km from the city and close to the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA). BIA opened in May 2008 and re-scheduled its operations during the 2009 event, too. Mr Marcel Hungerbuehler, President of BIAL, said, “We are proud that the Aero India show is held in our city [and is] drawing global attention and business to Bangalore. While we will make necessary provisions to ensure success of the show, we will also work to ensure that our passengers and airlines are put through minimum inconvenience due to resultant partial closure and restriction of airspace usage at the Bengaluru International Airport.”

For Aero India rehearsals during February 6-8, BIA will halt its air traffic from 10 a.m. to noon; again from 2 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. During February 9-13, flights to and from BIA will not operate from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 2.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Normally mid-day is a relatively lean period for airport traffic.
