A specialist will soon be engaged to ascertain reasons for frequent breakage of glass and collapse of false ceilings at the newly constructed terminal of the Chennai airport.
This morning a glass panel at gate no. 4 cracked and shattered. This gate is used by Air India and Indigo Airlines for departing passengers . Nobody was injured in the incident.
The glass break is 12th such incident in the last six to eight months when either a glass panel broke or false ceiling collapsed.
“This is really embarrassing,” said an official of the Chennai airport who did not want to named. “We are seeking the help of a specialist to know the reasons for such incidents,” he said.
Manufacturers claim there was no fault in the quality of glass. There are nearly 1,000 glass panels at the airport. Usually, the glass breaks due to heat. However, in the last couple of months, the heat levels are down, the official said.
Airports Authority of India is investigating the technical reasons behind these incidents, the official said. Over Rs 2,000 crore has been spent on the newly-built terminal .
