The All-India Railwaymen Federation (AIRF), has said that just converting production units into corporates will not result in any “performance-related” improvement. To drive home the point, it cited the example of BSNL, which was profitable before it was ‘corporatised’.

Recently, the Indian Railways considered a proposal to spin off all the production units into a single rolling stock company.

“We are for both financial and functional autonomy to all the production units so that the respective management and workforce can evolve best practices and procedures to make those units highly competitive . Any concrete proposal in this regard is most welcome and workers will be too happy to consider,” AIRF has stated.

AIRF said the Modern Coach Factory (MCFis slated to make 2,158 coaches, tripling its production in just two years. Also, MCF has turned out top quality coaches at almost half the cost at which they were imported, said the AIRF.
