GMR Airport, which operates Hyderabad and Delhi airports, plans to set up a modern cargo handling facility here.

The facility, which is likely to be operational by 2013, will come up in a 25-acre land and have a cargo handling facility of one million tonne (mt). The facility will house a logistics park, exclusive facility for freight forwarding and warehouses among others.

“The establishment of such a facility near the Delhi International airport has been a long pending demand. We have engaged a global consultant and will have the architectural roadmap ready by next year,” Mr P.S. Nair, CEO Corporate, GMR, told reporters here on Tuesday.

He was speaking on the eve of the 6th ACI Asia Pacific Regional Assembly conference to be held here from Wednesday.

He said the current facility that exists is a small one operated by the local chapter of the Air Cargo Agents Association of India (ACAAI).

“In terms of cargo handling capacity, it will touch one million tonne by 2013 against the current capacity of 6 lakh tonne in the existing facility,” he added.

Speaking on the air traffic at Delhi airport, Mr Nair said there has been a 40 per cent increase in domestic traffic and 32 per cent increase in international traffic compared to the previous summer schedule.

These cargo villages around major airports would have an integrated cargo infrastructure and would be single window set ups to provide forward and backward linkages.

Airport upgrade

Meanwhile, Mr V.P. Agarwal, Chairman, Airports Authority of India, said it had embarked upon modernisation and up-gradation of 58 airports across the country.

“We are also creating more non-metro airports. Traffic in non metro airports is poised to grow fast because of the need for connectivity.”
