V O Chidambaranar Port handled an all-time record cargo traffic of 32.41 million tonnes in the 2014-15 fiscal, an increase of 13.17 per cent over the last year’s 28.64 million tonnes.

This performance was higher by 1.28 per cent than the 32 million target set by the Ministry of Shipping, the Port said in a release.

The Port crossed the target of 32 million tonnes by handling 32.03 MT on Mar 28 2015. The target was achieved three days ahead of the current fiscal year ending March 31, it said.

In containers, the Port handled a record throughput of 5,59,727 TEUs in 2014-15, compared with the previous year’s figure of 5,07,735 TEUs, an increase of 10.24 per cent. The Shipping Ministry had set the target at 5,47,890 TEUs.

Imports accounted for 23.99 Million Tonnes, a 14.35 per cent increase compared toe previous year’s import traffic of 20.98 MT. Exports accounted for 8.42 MT, an increase of 9.78 per cent compared with the previous financial year’s export traffic of 7.67 MT, it said.
