Speakers at a SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) workshop on campus cooperatives have stressed the need for more participation by youths in cooperative movement among the member nations.

Inaugurating the workshop, organised by the Mangalore University Employees Credit Cooperative Society and the Department of Business Administration of Mangalore University here on Wednesday, Mr Chandrapal Singh Yadav, President of the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI), said that students should play a major role and support cooperative movement in the country.

Though some universities in the country have campus cooperatives, this should be extended to other parts of the country also.

Mr G.T. Devegowda, President of the Karnataka State Cooperative Federation, said that women and youth should take active participation in the cooperative movement.

The participation by students in campus cooperatives will provide them first-hand experience of cooperative system in the country. Much needs to be done in this matter, he said.

Ms Anita Manchanda, Chief Executive of NCUI, said that the number of campus cooperatives in the country should be increased. This will lead to more participation by youths in this movement.

The cooperative movement now is mainly focused on agriculture sector. Other sectors should also play a prominent role in this, she said.

Mr Mohammed Ali Hasan, Vice-President of ICA-AP (International Cooperative Alliance – Asia Pacific) Committee on University Campus Cooperatives, said that the committee focuses on issues such as leadership, entrepreneurship development and global peace among others.

Welcoming the gathering, Dr T.Y. Mallaiah, President of the Mangalore University Employees Credit Cooperative Society, said that the objectives of the workshop are to provide an opportunity to the representatives of the SAARC countries to learn about campus cooperatives and to create a platform for exchange of ideas and sharing experiences of promoting and strengthening campus cooperatives in the SAARC countries.

Dr T.N. Sreedhara, Convener of the advisory committee of the workshop, said that delegates participating in the workshop will be taken on a visit to some of the successful cooperative institutions in the region.
