Mr Kamal Nath, who assumed charge as the Urban Development Minister, said on Thursday that his emphasis would be on creation of world-class cities and urban transportation.
“Urban transport is a big challenge today. It needs priority,” said Mr Nath.
He also talked about Delhi Metro and said his aim would be to ensure that its network goes up to 415 km by 2017, making it bigger than the London Metro.
In the housing sector, he noted a “huge gap” in demand and supply, and said steps would be taken to involve private sector in the construction of affordable houses. “There is a huge requirement for affordable housing. But how can it happen when land prices are high. We will need to examine all these aspects,” he said.
“With 8-9 per cent growth which we have in the country, we have to facilitate the creation of economically vibrant, inclusive, efficient and sustainable urban habitats,” the Minister pointed out.
