The Karnataka government has cleared Udupi Power Corporation Ltd’s proposal to buy 1.5 million tonnes of imported coal.
Briefing reporters after a Cabinet meet, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said the Cabinet meeting, chaired by the Chief Minister, allowed the company to buy coal and commission its 600 MW second unit at Udupi.
Nimhans campus
As for other decisions, the Cabinet cleared the proposal of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) to set up its north campus near K R Puram. The campus with all modern labs is expected to come up on 38 acres of land.
Loan waiver
To tide over the drought situation in the State, the Cabinet has decided to waive crop loans up to Rs 25,000. This is likely to help 15 lakh farmers and is likely to cost the State exchequer Rs 3,500 crore.
Farmers who have taken farm loans between August 1, 2011 and July 25, 2012 are eligible. The decision was announced by the Chief Minister in the recent session of the state Legislature, Kageri said. “Government notification will be issued very soon,” he added.
Seed scheme
The Cabinet also decided to launch a Rs 50-crore ‘Own seed development scheme.’
“Through this scheme, government is likely to fund storage facilities, provide tarpaulin, build small godowns and moisture detection devices,” Kageri said.
Housing scheme
Karnataka Housing Board’s proposal to set up 53 housing complex with a budget of Rs 7,888 crore was also cleared. Kageri said KHB is likely to create 1.34 lakh sites and build 6,867 houses in the State.
Cabinet also approved plan to build 30 km of roads in each of the 189 rural constituencies at a cost of Rs 2,160 crore. So far already 20 km of such rural roads have already been completed.
The State is to participate in the National Land Records Modernisation Programme, under which the Central government funding scheme. The State’s share is 40 per cent and the balance is to be provided by the centre.
