Mineral water being sold in small bottles of 250 ml and less capacity will be banned soon, according to the Karnataka Minister for Environment and Ecology, Mr Krishna Palemar.
In an informal chat with presspersons at a function to launch green energy initiatives of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd at Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday, he said many companies are selling water in small plastic bottles. This will add to the problem of plastic waste in the State. Considering this, the Ministry is planning to ban such bottles of 250 ml and less capacity.
Instead, they should adopt bio-degradable materials for packaging mineral water, he said.
An office note on banning small bottles of mineral water will be issued soon, he said.
The Ministry has initiated the process of banning plastic carry-bags in the temples in the State, Mr Palemar said.
The Ministry is also planning to reward local bodies for adopting eco-friendly measures. A panel has been constituted in this regard, he said.
The Minister believed that initiatives like this will help encourage people to adopt environment-friendly practices. Earlier speaking at the function organised, he congratulated the cooperative for adopting green energy initiatives.
